My name is Helen Watford Gray and I garden in Fife, on the east coast of Scotland. After 13 years of creating a fairly traditional garden in ten acres around the Victorian house and ruined castle in which we used to live, I am readjusting my ideas to build a new garden around the very contemporary house that my husband and I have built and which is now our home.
It’s very different. A simple modern house begs for simple modern planting, and the design rules that govern the house seem to extend out into the garden with far more rigour than those of the more traditional, ornamented houses in which I have lived in the past.
Simple, as it turns out, is really hard.
